Courtyard > Enemies > Fire Elementals

Greetings, apprentice. Come to see our little rogue's gallery, have you? Yes. Well, after all - why not? It's important to know about those that might harm you, and there are certainly enough individuals in the City who would wish to harm us. The ones who don't know about us see as a threat, and the ones that do know of our existence - well, sometimes I think they almost see us as trophies. At any rate, best you'd learn their weaknesses before they find yours.

Fire Elementals

Classification: Elemental

Location(s): Hot and arid locations

Variations: none

Known Weaknesses: water arrows, burrick gas

Description:

An ancient and powerful menace, the Fire Elemental is one of four elementals which can be summoned by those with the ability and knowledge to do so. An elemental is literally the embodied form of whatever element they represent - fire, earth, air, or water. Elementals are extremely rare and can be extremely deadly. The Fire Elemental is the only one known to inhabit parts of the City, and it is this one we will discuss.

We Keepers have always known of the existence of Elementals, of course, but they are not something to be summoned or studied lightly. The Brotherhood of the Hand, for instance, regularly summon and dismiss Elementals as part of their ritualistic experiments. Such is a dangerous game to play, and care must be taken to maintain control in such... studies. An Elemental unleashed, however - under the control of none - is an experience none wanted to witness. Unfortunately, it was not to be so.

When an expedition of our order traveled deep below to the ruins of Karath-Din, they found not one but several Fire Elementals throughout the City. Although their mission was completed successfully, only one of the twenty sent below returned. Sadly, even that one was but a shell of his former self. The Elementals showed intelligence - stalking and teasing their prey - something that the ancient manuscripts did not reveal. Furthermore, the Elementals were relentless in their pursuit and aggression. Their only weakness appeared to be water arrows - an infinite supply of which our expedition did not carry.

However, it was upon Garrett's later... expedition... that we learned Fire Elementals are also vulnerable to the gas emitted by burricks. During this excursion, a Fire Elemental was led into an area of the ruins inhabited by a Burrick community. Upon detecting each other, the Fire Elemental and several Burricks began to fight each other -- the burricks with their gas and the Elemental with its missiles of fire. Although many Burricks perished, the community was victorious. This should be kept in mind if any further expeditions are planned for Karath-Din.

There have been no variations noted among Fire Elementals. All specimens documented have resembled large hovering balls of flame which attack with smaller projectiles of fire upon detecting an enemy. Fire Elementals move slowly but can release their projectiles with astonishing speed, rendering even the quickest Keepers slain in moments.

Weaknesses:

The preferred method of dealing with a Fire Elemental is to fire a single water arrow directly into the ball of flame. If done without alerting the Elemental, this will destroy the creatures instantly. If water is not available, one should remember that they also appear vulnerable to Burrick gas - a solution only possible if their are Burricks nearby, of course.

Threat Assessment:

Fire Elementals can only be found in one area of the City - the ruins of Karath-Din. It is possible, however, that others have been summoned elsewhere by the Hand mages or others versed in the elemental arts. If a Fire Elemental is present, extreme caution should be taken around them. The light and heat given off by an alerted Elemental can easily reveal or damage a hidden Keeper. Due to this, threat assessment for Fire Elementals is considered high.
