Fire Shadows
Classification: Undead/Elemental (?) Location(s): varies Variations: none Known Weaknesses: water |
Description:
A rarity among the less-explored areas of our City, Fire Shadows have only been seen on a few isolated occasions. Prior to the Age of Darkness, a thorough search of the archives was performed with no results. Strange indeed is the creature we do not know of. But such has been corrected, for we know of them now.
A Fire Shadow appears as a man, blackened and charred, with head and hands ignited in flame. They apparently walk about, possibly patrolling, possibly not, yet immediately lighting any area they approach. Only two Fire Shadows have been accounted for in permanent locations - one dwells in the tunnels beneath the Old Quarter while the second apparently protects the Mystic's Soul jewel deep within the Bonehoard.
The current theory on the origin of Fire Shadows is that they are possibly the undead remains of a mage - specifically, a fire mage - that which the Hand Brotherhood refer to as a "pyromancer". The Hand are very meticulate regarding the burial of their dead, so it's quite possible that Fire Shadows are common among dead fire mages. For this theory to be confirmed or dismissed, further information must be obtained from the Fortress of the Hand.
Regardless of their origin, Fire Shadows are aggressive, easily agitated, and can quickly cause massive amounts of damage when attacking an intruder with their burning hands. Conflict with these creatures is not recommended.
Weaknesses:
Fire Shadows are unique in that they apparently cannot be killed. They are also unique among the undead, as none of the methods recorded in the The Journals of Morgan appear to harm them. They are impervious to the blade and are seemingly not affected by flash bombs, fire arrows, or holy water. However, they seem to have an aversion towards water in general. If a single water arrow is shot towards an unaware Fire Shadow, the creature will flee - usually leaving a single fire crystal behind. The shadow will soon return, however, and resume its patrol.
Threat Assessment:
Fire Shadows are very rare and can be chased away using a single water arrow. Unless one is actually facing an alarmed Fire Shadow, the threat assessment for these creatures is low.
