Courtyard > Enemies > Hammerites

Greetings, apprentice. Come to see our little rogue's gallery, have you? Yes. Well, after all - why not? It's important to know about those that might harm you, and there are certainly enough individuals in the City who would wish to harm us. The ones who don't know about us see as a threat, and the ones that do know of our existence - well, sometimes I think they almost see us as trophies. At any rate, best you'd learn their weaknesses before they find yours.

Hammerites

Classification: Human

Location(s): varies

Variations: Novice, Worker, Soldier, Priest

Known Weaknesses: sword, dagger, blackjack, arrows, mines, gas

Description:

The Order of the Hammer is a common sight within the City. Although nowhere near its former strength, the Order is still a power to contend with - both within the Council Chambers as well as the streets themselves.

A religious faction devoted to the Builder deity, the Hammerites (as they are often called by commoners) once represented the arm of law enforcement in the City. With the Baron and his Guard away at war, the Order and its members found little opposition in the form of the City Council. Although the Council and its City Watch were the official representatives of the City, the Council feared economic or outright violent conflict with the Hammers and typically did little to oppose them. In fact, during the peak of the Order's reign, criminals often found themselves in Cragscleft Prison - the Hammerites' private prison and foundry - rather than the City's own Pavelock Prison in South Quarter.

After the Mechanist schism, however, and the actions of Karras, the Order of the Hammer never quite reclaimed its former glory. The Order accepted many former Mechanists back into their ranks, which bolstered its numbers considerably, but many in the City still associate the Order with the Mechanists and the failed attempt by Karras to poison the City's inhabitants. Their popularity (and credibility) has thus suffered what may be irreparable damage.

To we Keepers, however, the Hammerites can be as dangerous as ever. Know a Hammer by their trademark red and gray uniforms, as well as by the massive sledge hammers carried by many. All Hammers are trained not only in the workings of their mechanisms but also in the arts of combat. Each Hammer - whether worker or guard - is trained as a soldier. The Hammerite Priesthood can be even deadlier as they require no obvious weapon but instead rely upon magicks to defend themselves.

Weaknesses:

Hammerites are susceptible to the same weapons and tactics as any other human. They can be slain with blade or arrow, knocked out with a blackjack, or killed with explosive force. Of course, the latter tactic is quite noisy and may alert others to your presence. Keep in mind, of course, that anyone slain by sword or arrow occasionally cries out when struck.

Threat Assessment:

These days the Order of the Hammer and its members are usually found only in or around facilities of their own. Although Hammerites are sometimes seen walking the streets of the City, this is no longer as commonplace as it once was. In recent times, we Keepers have formed an uneasy alliance with the Order - an alliance which offers us some protection. At times, however, it may be necessary to infiltrate a Hammerite facility in an... undiplomatic... manner. Under such circumstances, one must never identify oneself as a Keeper, even if it means putting oneself in harm's way. When faced as an enemy, the Hammerites garner a high threat level.
