Treebeasts
Classification: Non-Human Location(s): Pagan territories Variations: Metal Age, Age of Darkness Known Weaknesses: sword, dagger, gas, fire, explosive force |
Description:
Pagan legend holds that the Trickster once held dominion over the world, and that his Empire was composed of all manner of creature. At least some of these legends must be fact, since living proof has presented itself in recent times. When Garrett ventured into the Maw of Chaos for the second time during the Metal Age, he encountered there a creature which Pagan legend holds was once the private guard of the Trickster himself - the Treebeast. Since that time, we have had occasion to study the beasts and learn more of these forest giants.
Treebeasts resemble large walking trees and can, in fact, remain nearly motionless in perfect imitation of an actual tree. When in their native forested habitat, Treebeasts are nearly invisible among the other plants and trees. Upon detecting an intruder, however, the forest comes alive as the beasts reveal themselves and begin their fierce attack.
Treebeasts can move as quickly as a man and are difficult to outrun. When attacking with their wooded limbs, they can quickly decimate one's health in but a few blows. There are two known variations of the creature:
Variation: Metal Age Prior to the death of Viktoria, Garrett encountered Treebeasts in a forested area of the Maw of Chaos. That is where we first learned of the creatures aside from Pagan legend and hearsay. The beasts indeed resembled trees and could be difficult to spot among the other foliage. Garrett learned of their true nature with much difficulty, however. | |
Variation: Age of Darkness After the death of Viktoria, all known entrances into the Maw of Chaos have vanished. The ultimate fate of the Maw is unknown, but Treebeasts have been sighted patrolling within several Pagan territories. The creatures still resemble trees, but now appear even more monstrous than before. They have lost none of their speed or fierceness, either. |
Weaknesses:
Treebeasts are not immortal, but they can be difficult to kill. They are vulnerable to the blade and arrow, but such a tactic is not advised as close combat with a Treebeast is an imbalanced equation. We have found that the preferable method for dealing with Treebeasts is to lay a mine in their path. With luck, a single mine will destroy a Treebeast if it is caught unaware. Keep in mind, however, that the noise from the blast may attract others to the area.
Threat Assessment:
Treebeasts are found only in Pagan territories and should usually be avoided if possible. Current threat assessment for them is medium.
